Victor Hugo was a French author in the nineteenth century. He wrote poetry, plays, novels and an autobiography. Two of his most famous works in North America are the novels "Les Miserables" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", but in France he is more famous for his plays and poetry. He also played a role in French politics of the time, opposing and criticizing the tyranny of Louis Napoleon (later Emperor Napoleon III). When Louis Napoleon became emperor of France Hugo went into exile for several years, returning to France after the emperor was overthrown.
