The longships had long planks fitted into the hull running across from port to starboard side, so men could sit and row.

The configuration is really not so different from any ship of older configuration, such as galley, cutter, whalers or any rowing ship.

Imagine that you are out with your date on a small rowing boat and look at the seat. That's exactly how it was, except larger and it fitted more men.
