The 1800's saw a few different styles of dresses starting with the empire style, the crinolines/looped skirts, and the bustle.
The empire style was modeled after the greeks and was far simpler than the styles surrounding it. The major difference being the waist of the dress was moved just below the breasts and flowed out from there (like a modern maternity dress).
At the beginning of the century, dresses tended to have deep, wide necklines and as time went on, the sleeves and skirt became poofier (to the point of ridiculous-ness). For the majority of the 1800's, skirts were filled out with artificial petticoats like the crinolines, metal hoops, and bustles. And since that wasn't enough, most dresses were coated in frills, layers of fabric, and lace.
Near the end of the century however, things like the feminists' movement and the popularity of the bicycle prompted more "active" wear to be experimented with.

woman in the 1800s were ugly so who cares what they wore! right?
The person that answered this question before is ridiculously wrong.
Women in the 1800s wore several layers of clothing. Getting dressed for the day was a lot different than modern times. The first layers consisted of a Chemise (also known as a Slip or Shift), Stockings and Drawers (an early version of underwear). The next layer was a Corset and a Kerchief. Kerchiefs allowed women to maintain modesty since not a lot of skin was shown during this time. Kerchiefs were normally taken off for a formal party or dance. The Gown and Shoes were last to be put on. A ladies hair was normally tied up into a bun, since it was not very common for people to bathe and wash their hair as often as we do in modern times.

In the 1800's women wore dresses and aprons. They wore daycaps on the head.to keep their hair clean and their hair out of the way. They also wore several layers of undergarments. The first layer was the chemise. Next was the corset and the final layer was the petticoat. Some wore underpants tied around the waist. And the last item would be stockings held up by garters.
They wore very long dresses, and covered themselves a lot especially if they had a husband.
