Some species of bee, such as the honey bee, will die after stinging a person as the stinger is barbed and is torn from their adomen in the process of stinging you. However not all species of bee have a barbed stinger and may be able to sting you repeatedly and live.

The sting is left in the wound, and is attached to the bee's intestines. A honey bee stings only in defence and since its innards go with the sting, it dies. Worker bees exist to gather food for the hive and to defend that hive, and will defend itself - and its hive - literally to the death.

A wasp's sting is smooth and the wasp can withdraw it easily and without damage after stinging. A wasp can also sting more than once.

A worker honey bee's sting is barbed, so when it stings you it cannot pull the sting out. When the bee pulls away it leaves the sting behind together with the venom sac and the muscles that pump the venom, and sometimes part of its gut. After this severe injury the bee will die.

A queen bee's sting is smooth so potentially she can sting more than once without harming herself, but you are very unlikely to encounter one because the queen only leaves the hive with a swarm.

Bumble bees also have a smooth sting so can also sting without hurting themselves.

Why do bees go near the ocean to die?

You didn't say where you live or why you came to the conclusion bees actually go to the ocean to die. I'm guessing you're asking because walking along the oceans edge you may have noticed large numbers of dead bees washing up on shore? I have occasionally seen this while living in Hawaii. Hawaii is a major hub for all honey bee products and bee breeding so it only follows there will be large numbers of bees in the area near the sea. One bee hive contains 60,000 bees and a worker bee lives an average of 4 to 6 weeks so it's only natural for many of these bees to simply die as they are foraging. They could fall onto the sand and be swept by wind or wave to the large numbers you see at the edge of the shore. Or fall into the ocean, float and be pushed to shore. The ocean air currents and spray can also be deadly as once a bee has landed on the water without the ability to climb up onto something to dry its wings it will eventually drown. Bees will not cross large expanses of water but like to fly along the edge of water. It's not that they actually go to the ocean to die. Hope this helps? ------ Another possibility is that the bees didn't go to the ocean to die, they went there to drink. Like all other animals, bees need water. However, although they are brilliant fliers, they can't swim, so if the water is too deep for them to stand and drink they will drown.
