On Windows Server Systems, a domain controller (DC) is a server that responds to security authentication requests (logging in, checking permissions, etc.) within the Windows Server domain. A domain is a concept introduced in Windows NT whereby a user may be granted access to a number of computer resources with the use of a single username and password combination.

Additional Domain Controller (ADC) or Backup Domain Controller (BDC) is a backup computer hosting DC services to be used as a backup in case your primary DC goes down or is somehow unavailable.

The Primary Domain Controller (PDC) and BDC synchronise their data on a regular basis so that either can be used as DC.

The domain controller (DC) is the server that responds to security authentication requests (logging in, checking permissions, etc.) within the Windows Server domain. The additional domain controller or the backup domain controller is an alternate controller. It has now been effectively removed partially to emphasize the multi-master replication technology available in Windows

A child domain controller creates a sub domain in your active directory tree. This is used as a security feature so a group of users can have separate, policies and limited or controlled access to the parent domain resources. An additional domain controller adds a secondary domain controller to the domain. It's recommended to have at least 2 domain controllers per domain to take advantage of the high availability features of Active Directory.

Active Directory is called a directory service, it stores objects like users and computers.

A domain controller is the server running the Active Directory is called.

You can have multiple domain controllers for many reasons, like redundancy so should one server fail, people can still login in and access things like joined computers using another domain controller while the first server is being fixed.

Just is small example of how Active Directory is to be used:

Forest (abc.com)

Domain (newyork.abc.com)

Domain Controller D

Domain Controller C

Computer A, users can login to the computer using their account on using either Domain Controller D or Domain Controller C depending on different factors like location etc.

Computer B, same

Computer C, same

Domain controllers have rights to authenticate and authorize login of users in domain

Only one Domain Controller in a domain can handle can tasks like the Global Catalog.

Primary Domain Controller (PDC)

Infrastructure MAster

RID

Domain Master

all are domain controllers with specfic FSMO roles

A Primary Domain Controller (PDC) is a server computer in a pre-windows2000 NT server Domain. A domain is a concept used in NT server Operating_systemwhereby a user may be granted access to a number of computer resources with the use of a single username and password combination

The PDC has the master copy of the user accounts database which it can access and modify. The BDC computers have a copy of this database, but these copies are read-only. The PDC will replicate its account database to the BDCs on a regular basis. The BDCs exist in order to provide a backup to the PDC, and can also be used to authenticate users logging on to the network. If a PDC should fail, one of the BDCs can then be promoted to take its place. The PDC will usually be the first domain controller that was created unless it was replaced by a promoted BDC.

PDC emulator master does not have the same special role in replication as the Primary Domain Controller in pre-Windows 2000 systems, but does have certain additional responsibilities:

The PDC emulator master acts in place of the Primary Domain Controller if there are Windows NT 4.0 domain controllers (BDCs) remaining within the domain, acting as a source for them to replicate from.

The PDC emulator master receives preferential replication of password changes within the domain. As password changes take time to replicate across all the domain controllers in an Active Directory domain, the PDC emulator master receives notification of password changes immediately, and if a logon attempt fails at another domain controller, that domain controller will forward the logon request to the PDC emulator master before rejecting it.

The PDC emulator master also serves as the machine to which all domain controllers in the domain will synchronise their clocks. It, in turn, should be configured to synchronise to an external NTP time source.

In network first server has been install is call domain controller server.. If you wan t to check server is domain controller or, backup domain controller. you can check Run -> cmd -> net accounts If computer role will show PRIMARY it means your domain is PRIYMARY domain controller, if it will be show BACKUP, means you can assume my domain installed in my network is ADC (Additional Domain Controller) Hope you will get benefit.. Can Domains have many primary domain controllers?

No the reason it's called a primary Domain Controller is because it's the one controller that has all the domain names and address for that Domain.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of creating different domain names?

Domains can be very complicated. If you create diffrent names for the domains it can couse issues in connectivity. The primary Domain controller should have the Base line name of the entire forest(All of the computers in a network) When creating second domains they can have subnames. Example: Primary domain controller is called Contoso.com, When adding other domain controllers they should look like this: Contoso.xyz.com If you create a domain with a completely diffrent name it will not be able to join the primary domain. If you create all the domain controllers with the exact same name then they will not know what to connect to or witch one is primary

What is RID master?

What is the RID Master role? The RID Master is one of the operations master roles that exist in each domain in a forest. It controls the sequence number for the domain controllers within a domain. It provides a unique sequence of RIDs to each domain controller in a domain. When a domain controller creates a new object, the object is assigned a unique security ID consisting of a combination of a domain SID and a RID. The domain SID is a constant ID, whereas the RID is assigned to each object by the domain controller. The domain controller receives the RIDs from the RID Master. When the domain controller has used all the RIDs provided by the RID Master, it requests the RID Master to issue more RIDs for creating additional objects in the domain. When a domain controller exhausts its pool of RIDs, and the RID Master is unavailable, any new object in the domain cannot be created

How do you set up DNS for a child domain?

To set up DNS for a child domain, create a delegation record on the parent DNS server for the child DNS server. Create a secondary zone on the child DNS server that transfers the parent zone from the parent DNS server. Note Windows Server 2003 has additional types of zones, such as Stub Zones and forest-level integrated Active Directory zones, that may be a better fit for your environment. Set the child domain controller to point to itself first. As soon as an additional domain controller is available, set the child domain controller to point to this domain controller in the child domain as its secondary.

What is rodc?

The RODC refers to the additional domain controller for the domain that hosts the read-only partitions of the Active Directory database. It is designed to be deployed in a branch office environment.

What happens if primary domain controller fails?
