The ancient Roman civilization had a number of accomplishments. Here I will name two that historians will most likely agree with.
1. Any society must provide clean water to its citizens. In ancient times many societies could not do this. Rome however built a water system that brought in clean fresh water to use in public baths, fountains, even in public toilets. They used the aqueduct system to bring in water from hundreds of miles away. In line with this they had a "system of public works" which maintained a good sewerage system. This was not always the case in many societies in ancient history.
2. Any society needs to have a good system of land transportation. Rome did this with an advanced roadway system that was built to last. Construction of lasting roads required allot of work and engineering skills.
These are two accomplishments that few people would object to.
