The psychological effects are numerous and victims of Stockholm syndrome are left with mental anguish that can last a lifetime. The effects are many including, depression, low self esteem, negative body image, self-blame, social isolation, relationship problems, self destructive behavior, sexual difficulties, parenting problems, flashbacks, guilt, anger and loss (Sullivan, 2006; South Eastern Centre Against Sexual Assault, 2006). Many children who are put in these situation suffer from Dissociative Identity Disorder as a secondary coping mechanism. These children will develop alternate personalities that take on the Stockholm syndrome allowing the central personality to feel the anger associated with the terror. With so many side effects it is extremely important for sufferers to receive treatment.
