Egyptians started to write because merchants needed a way to write things down (example: how mant sheeps they had bought and sold). It would've been very difficult to draw all the sheep that they bought and sold that month. Religious leaders needed a way to count their money and write down how much they made and how much they spent. The government needed a way to write down taxes.
