How is a tsunami different from a normal wave?

Hurricane waves are normal wind driven waves, just bigger.

Tsunamis are not wind driven and have a different structure. Tsunamis waves have influence all the way down to the ocean floor and have wavelengths of miles. When in open ocean they are not even noticeable and travel at hundreds of miles per hour. When they reach shore they slow down and build up, but still maintain an enormous wavelength so they carry much more water than a regular wave of the same height.

So while wind driven waves like those in hurricanes reach shore they wash in and out in a few seconds and don't come very far in. By contrast, when a tsunami hits it keeps coming in for up to fifteen minutes sometimes coming several miles inland.
