A 64-bit processor has a wider data path. It is able to move and process data 64 bits at a time in a single operation. A 32-bit processor would have to do this in multiple instructions. It also can have a 64 bit addressing field allowing it to access a higher memory address range without resorting to memory segmentation methods. The 64 bit processors will also have wider registers to manage bigger chunks of data faster.

It mainly deals with how much RAM the processor can use. Lets compare this to your home address. If your city was limited to using 4 digits for your home address, you could only have 9,999 houses before you ran out. If your city used 8 digits instead you could have 99,999,999 houses, or more than they would ever need.

A 32 bit processor can only address 2^32 locations, or 4GB of RAM. a 64 bit processor can address 2^64 address, which is roughly 184 with 17 zeros after it, which is more than you will ever need.

Speed
Data is processed in 32 or 64 bit chunks. If a program needs to work with very large numbers, a 64 bit processor will handle it faster since it doesn't have to do any extra work when the number is larger than 2^32.

This isn't always the case. If you are working with small numbers, there's no advantage to having 64 bits. The extra bits will just be filled with 0's. For example, if you add 0005 to 0008 you get 0013. If you add 00000005 to 00000008 you still get 00000013.

So don't think 64 bit is twice as fast as 32 bit, because it isn't.

First off, I'm assuming you know what a microprocessor is. If not, please go look up that question (or, a related topic, the CPU (Central Processing Unit). 32 and 64 bits processors refer to the size of the native (default) word size in a processor. In a 32 bit processor, all basic operations happen on chunks of information 32-bits in size - information requiring more storage requires multiples of the 32-bit word. Can you make a 32 bit sys into a 128 bit sys?

Technically no. A bit is an electronic circuit therefore a processor that uses 32 bits can't be swapped out for one that uses 128 bits, because the 128 bit processor, because the other 96 circuits don't have anything to connect to. However, you can emulate a 128 bit processor with a 32 bit processor if the 32 bit processor is fast enough, or if you have a multicore processor. For example a quadcore 32 bit processor has 4 cores which handle 32 bits each, so using all 4 cores together you could process 128 bits all at once. If you run a dualcore 32bit processor using both cores you would have 64 bits and would have to run the processor twice as fast as the 128 bit processor to handle the same amount of data. A single core 32bit processor would then have to be run at 4 times the speed.

All Windows Operating systems are designed to function with a specific hardware architecture design. *some 64bit processor/motherboard combinations have a backward compatibility that allow you to use a 32bit operating system on a 64bit system by disabling 32bit. When you operate a 64bit processor in 32 bit mode it turns off some of the processors. This means a dual core will work as a single core, a quad core will work as a dual core (you can never get more the 2 processors to function in 32bit mode, even if there are more then 4 processors on the same processor die.)
