There has been much publicized about the captivity and the horrible mistreatment of elephants and many elephants do not enjoy captivity. When not used for performing they are usually chained to a large post and you will often see the elephant sway from one side to the other meaning the animal is not happy or content. Elephants are magnificent creatures (one of my favorites) and they have great family bonding in wild life and try to continue this in captivity, but once again man is either greedy or feels they know what is best for the animal. Elephants will protect their own and NEVER leave a sick family member behind. 'The walk' to hidden grave sites is done by the whole herd and they will stay there until the elderly or sick member of the herd dies. This elephant you are talking about has NO mental disorder other than the freedom it should have! Since it has probably been in captivity too long then freedom is out, but it could need a mate so I would consider this. Elephants get lonely! If a baby has died or has been given away then the female will go into a full-blown depression.
