Christians believe that when we die we either go to a place of reward, known as heaven, or a place of punishment, called hell. They believe that when Jesus died, the sins of those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God were forgiven. The fact of forgiveness and consequent access to heaven is known as 'salvation' and thus Jesus is known as the Saviour.

MG Easton in his "Illustrated Bible Dictionary" [1897] defines "Salvation" as:-

SALVATION

This word is used of the deliverance of the Israelites from the Egyptians (Exo_14:13), and of deliverance generally from evil or danger. In the New Testament it is specially used with reference to the great deliverance from the guilt and the pollution of sin wrought out by Jesus Christ, "the great salvation" (Heb_2:3). (See REDEMPTION; REGENERATION.)

Christians what does it mean?

They believe that Christ Jesus is the savior. To Christians He is also the creator and the almighty and eternal God of the Bible. If He were not then He is a liar and cannot save anyone, not even Himself. It also means that Christians recognize Him as Lord of their life. They also recognize that God gave a free will and so there are many as the Bible says who will not believe although God has given them sufficient evidence to do so. About two thirds of the world do not believe in Jesus as the savior. I do not agree that God has given everyone sufficient evidence that Jesus is the only savior. Christians are those that follow the teachings of Christ. It does not matter if Jesus is considered as a god or not. It does not matter if the believer follows Mormonism, Jehovah's Witness, Amish, Orthodox, Catholic or any of the approximately 38,000 other denominations. If you believe in Jesus' teachings, then you're a Christian, period. It's believeing in Jesus that is important not the dictates of the denomination.
