Christians pray many things. They consider prayer talking to God. They praise Him, thank Him, confess their sins against Him, and pray for God to meet the needs of themselves and others. Where ever they want to.

Roman Catholic AnswerWhole volumes could be used to answer this question, I would recommend that one start with Part Four of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which has an excellent discussion of prayer, and of the Our Father. From the Catechism:

2650 Prayer cannot be reduced to the spontaneous outpouring of interior impulse: in order to pray, one must have the will to pray. Nor is it enough to know what the Scriptures reveal about prayer: one must also learn how to pray. Through a living transmission (Sacred Tradition) within "the believing and praying Church," (Dei Verbum 8) the Holy Spirit teaches the children of God how to pray.

2651 The tradition of Christian prayer is one of the ways in which the tradition of faith takes shape and grows, especially through the contemplation and study of believers who treasure in their hearts the events and words of the economy of salvation, and through their profound grasp of the spiritual realities they experience. (CF. Dei Verbum 8).

So, above all you are calling on the Holy Spirit to teach you to pray, you do this through the Church, most especially through the Holy Liturgy, which includes the Sacred Scripture, especially the Psalms. Also, prayer is an attitude of submission to God, wherein you realize who you are, and Who He IS, and in doing so realize your entire dependence on Him.

Prayer, par excellence, is the Mass, which is the prayer of Jesus, Himself, as He offers Himself to the Father, for our salvation, and offers Himself, to us, in Holy Communion. At the heart of the Mass, after the consecration, is the Our Father, which is the prayer that Jesus Himself taught us.

Christian Answer: All you need is your own mind. Man sees the outward appearance, but God looks into the heart.

There really isn't any special way to pray but Christians normally pray with their Bibles, cross, or simply their hands. Either way is fine, just to say "God" then begin praying. By doing this they open up a conversation with God. An article that I read called "How and Why to Pray" would be a really good start for you to read, also since you are online there is a prayer request site called GODPleaseHearMe that allows you to post your prayers online and get others to pray for you. Prayer is really power stuff and you should start tapping into your spiritual power asap.

Christian prayer depends upon the belief the God hears and answers prayer. On this principle, Christian prayer is mostly expressed in words, either silently in the head, or audibly.

Most Christian prayer can be considered to be covered by the elements of the prayer pattern set down by Jesus, in what is known as The Lord's Prayer:

Address to God:

Our Father in Heaven, Holy is your name.

Hope for the world:

Your kingdom come, your will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.

Hope for ourselves:

Give us today our daily bread (i.e. enough for what we need today).

Hope for the future:

Forgive us our sins

As we forgive those who sin against us (Jesus emphasised this condition).

Lead us not into times of hard testing, but deliver us from evil.

In Protestant circles, it is usual to include the declaration of faith:

For the kingdom is yours, now and forever.

This quote from Jesus Christ, the Message translation of the Holy Bible accurately describes what Christians should be praying for and the manner in which they should pray:

"With a God like this loving you, you can pray very simply. Like this:

Our Father in heaven,

Reveal who you are.

Set the world right;

Do what's best-

as above, so below.

Keep us alive with three square meals.

Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others.

Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil.

You're in charge!

You can do anything you want!

You're ablaze in beauty!

Yes. Yes. Yes."

In prayer there is a connection between what God does and what you do. You can't get forgiveness from God, for instance, without also forgiving others. If you refuse to do your part, you cut yourself off from God's part."

Jesus was asked a similar question and responded with a 'model' for the people to use. They lived during a time when most people prayed 'recited prayers.' This is not how we should pray to our Almighty Father - Creator of all things seen and unseen. Christians are told to come 'boldly to the throne of grace' (see Hebrews 4:16) with all our needs, concerns, wants and desires. Yet, we are also told to ask 'God's will be done, and not ours or anyone else (Luke 22:42; Malachi 1:9, etals).

The model given can be found in Matthew 6:9-13 and again in Luke 11:1-4. Following along with Jesus' words, we see the following:

* Acknowledge God as our Father living in the highest heaven with praise and thanks.

* Learn about His Coming Kingdom and why this world desperately needs it, asking for it to come soon.

* By His Will, pray for all - Church, Family, sick and needy - and your own decision making.

* Pray for the things in need.

* Pray for the forgiveness of your sins as well as others who sinned against you.

* Pray for protection - you, family, loved ones - from the evil one - ha satan.

* Close by acknowledging His great power and eternal glory.

We must remember we are the creature asking the Creator for things. We must come in a humble fashion, willing to change our ways. We must believe that our prayers will be answered - not necessarily in the timeframe we desire (Mark 11:24). Finally, we should do much of our personal praying in private - prayers with family or church members are to be done when the time calls for them:

Matthew 6:5-7New King James Version (NKJV) The Model Prayer5 "And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. 7 And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.

Christians can pray right where they are, wherever they are, any time. They don't need to go anywhere. However, Jesus encouraged His followers to pray in a closet; a quiet, private, secluded place. He Himself went out alone, away from people, in the early hours of the morning.
