The Gila monster is a poisonous lizard. There are only one or two poisonous lizard species in the world, so no freaking out and killing any lizard you see. There are no poisonous lizards in Australia, as we have plenty of poisonous snakes but if you harass a lizard, it can bite in defence and given it may have been eating maggots on a dead kangaroo, if you have broken skin, you could get an infection in the wound.
