Hrothgar tried numerous attempts to stop Grendel, including building a great hall called Heorot where his warriors could stay, but Grendel continued to terrorize the hall. The author's reaction conveys the futility of human efforts against a powerful supernatural force like Grendel, emphasizing the theme of the inevitability of fate and the limitations of mortal strength.

Hrothgar hasn't gotten rid of Grendel because he simply doesn't know what to do to get him to leave Herot alone at night. He has gotten old and is no longer able to protect his people.

Hrothgar made sacrifices, petitioned prayers, and hoped for Hell's support to get rid of Grendel. This did not work. Eventually Hygelac's thane, Beowulf, came to defeat him.

What was the cause of the battle between Beowulf and grendel?

The battle between Beowulf and Grendel was triggered by Grendel's attacks on Heorot, King Hrothgar's mead hall. Grendel was offended by the noises of joy and celebration coming from the hall and sought to bring terror and destruction to its inhabitants. Beowulf, hearing of the distress of the Danes, offered to help and faced Grendel in combat to stop his reign of terror.

What kind of argument or pact could King Hrothgar have made to stop Grendel's vicious attacks?

He could move his Hall Heorot so Grendel would stop attacking them, because after all, Grendel only wants his territory all to himself.

Three reason why Grendel from Beowulf might have led a painful life?

One reason Grendel led a painful life is that he was a descendant of Cain. From the beginning he was born out of pure evil. Another reason Grendel may have led a painful life because he was compared to a beast. The motives of this beast was to stop any festivities in Heorot Hall; which caused him to be a primary target of King Hrothgar. A third reason is the fact that Beowulf came to kill him. Clearly fighting the protagonist is a painful endeavor. Also Grendel is impatient with the music and celebration of Hrothgar's men; his home is a hell on earth; he was born in slime; his parents are the children of Cain, who were exiled by God; he is family to "a thousand forms of evil," who angrily fight against God.
