It is called futon, but it is not American futon. Japanese futon is something like a mattress but you can fold it and put it in the closet. Also they usually have to dry it under the sun to avoid the cotton inside to get wet and hard. These days, however, a very great number of Japanese people sleep on beds. This is especially the case for the elderly, who often have trouble rising from the very low (5-8 cm) futon. Both of the above paragraphs refer to sleeping at night: for naps, in Japan daily people can be seen sleeping on school desks (during lectures), on train and bus seats, and, often, during meetings and the like. However, most Japanese, even the homeless, sleep on _something_, even if it is simply a newspaper. Sleeping directly on the ground or some other surface upon which shoes are likely to have been, is very unusual. (Passing out from drink on such surfaces, however, is not.)

In beds, in their house. They also don't sleep facing North because they believe you will be cursed if you do.

considering people live in japan, I would assume they also people would also sleep there and hence i am making an educated guess without any hesitation that there are indeed beds in japan :)
