For the Chinese, it is custom to wear new clothes for Chinese New Year.
For the younger generation, it is not as important as what they wear so long as it is new.
For the older generation or for the more traditional, some females may wear cheongsams. Men may wear what western society has dubbed a smoking jacket. Both would be made from Chinese silk material. The men's may be darker in color while the female's is much more brighter.

On Chinese New Year, my outfit was: red fur jacket, hair tied in red ribbon, black skinny jeans, scarlet boots, tons of amber coloured bracelet, and it is important to wear red socks, red belt and red __ if it is your year( meaning if its your 12th year, or 24, 36,48 and so on and so forth)
