Due to the proliferation of payment options in America such as credit cards (Visa, MasterCard), Charge Cards (AMEX), debit cards, gift cards etc. we don't have a specific singular term for "Pocket Money" as it's not used exactly in the same manner as in other countries where cash is more prevalent.
However, "Walking Around Money", "Cash on Hand" or "Spending Cash" come to mind as similar. "Pocket Change" (or Chump Change) sounds similar, but more refers to small amounts, coins, or small amounts on a relative basis in exaggerated jest such as "$300,000 for that Ferrari. Pocket Change."
More often money is more commonly higher niche in description in America, so "Lunch Money" would be an everyday term. Coffee change, Laundry Money or Laundry change etc.

Pocket money does teach independence because children will know how to spend their money when they grow bigger. Children should be given pocket money to learn their maths as well. Make sure that children do not waste pocket money on waste. Children should be given pocket money so that they can learn how to save money and use it on something good. I hope this helped!
