Archaeologists believe that the ledges in step pyramids were used as ceremonial platforms for religious rituals, ceremonies, and offerings. They may have also served as a way to divide the pyramid into different levels of significance or to support buildings or structures for religious purposes.
Step pyramids served as royal tombs in ancient Egypt, with the most famous example being the Step Pyramid of Djoser in Saqqara. These pyramids were characterized by stacked layers or steps, which symbolized the sun's rays reaching towards the heavens. Step pyramids represented an early form of pyramid construction before the more familiar smooth-sided pyramids, such as those at Giza, were developed.
The pyramids in Egypt are located on the Giza Plateau, near Cairo. These famous pyramids, including the Great Pyramid of Giza, are some of the most iconic and well-preserved ancient structures in the world.
The steps in the pyramids represent the ascent to the afterlife. They were believed to help the deceased pharaoh transition to the heavens and join the gods. Each step was symbolic and tied to religious beliefs about the soul's journey in the afterlife.
The smallest pyramid in the world is the Pyramid of Menkaure located in Egypt. It is the smallest of the three main pyramids at the Giza complex, standing at 65 meters tall.
The Aztecs used a technique called "talud-tablero," where they built up the pyramid's core with stacked stones or mud bricks before facing it with slabs of stone. This created the stepped-pyramid shape that we associate with Aztec architecture. The pyramid's exterior was often adorned with carvings and sculptures to honor gods or commemorate important events.

There are 2 different types of pyramids: the step pyramid, and the true pyramid.
The step pyramids were like practice pyramids. They were getting the engineering down and the "how to". I doubt that without them they would have been able to engineer the Great Pyramid.
