They lay their eggs underneath hollyhocks & when they hatch they eat the leaves, turn into a crysalite & hatch! Then turn around & do the cycle over again. You can do this in captivity. I had more than 30 hatch one year. The also use other plants as well.

∙ 12y agoBlack Swallowtails Usually eat leaves,Dill,fruits,Parsley and rue so if you have plenty of these in your garden your caterpillars won't starve. Black swallowtails eat plenty and grow quicky. If you have more than one caterpillar you may have to buy/plant more Dill and parsley. You also have to be careful and wash the grocery store parsley and Dill because some have chemicals to tend to poison in them that may hurt the caterpillar.
