Nutrient-rich water and seeds are foods that boxelder bugs like to eat inside houses. The insects in question (Boisea trivittata) prioritize boxelder tree (Acer negundo) seeds outdoors as moist, nutritious food sources. They tend to eat less indoors during the fall and winter than outdoors in the spring and summer.
No, boxelder bugs do not kill grass. The insects in question (Boisea trivittata) have specific plant parts and types that are favored in their herbivorous diets. Grasses and grass-like plants such as rushes and sedges pose no competition, particularly not in landscapes dominated by the boxelder bug's namesake and preferred food source: boxelder tree (Acer negundo).
Boxelder bugs primarily feed on the seeds and leaves of boxelder trees and other maples, rather than grass. While they may occasionally be found on grass or in grassy areas, it is not a preferred habitat or food source for them. Their presence in grass is usually incidental as they seek shelter or warmth.

Birds such as grosbeaks, orioles, and blue jays; insects like assassin bugs and predatory stink bugs; and amphibians like tree frogs and salamanders all eat box elder bugs. Additionally, some spiders and wasps also prey on box elder bugs.
I had the same question!!! I dont believe in killing anthing and ill think he will freeze outside..so i ripped off a leaf from a plant, put him on it, then put him on a fake pine tree..for hiding so hes more comfortable than hanging around on my walls..then i sprayed the tree around him with some water...IDK it made me feel better about the situation at least. Good luck
Boxelder bugs typically take about 30 to 40 days to develop from eggs to adulthood, depending on environmental conditions like temperature and humidity. After hatching, the nymphs go through several stages, or instars, before reaching maturity. Warmer temperatures can accelerate their development, while cooler conditions may prolong it.
Pretty Much The Same Inside But Outside They Just Look Like Houses (You Get To Walk Around A Little Ring Of Houses
They will usually eat soft plants like flowers, leaves, and new twigs all year round. If they become a swarm with a large population, they may attack shade trees, stripping them of many of their leaves.
