"A buttress is an architectural structure built against or projecting from a wall which serves to support or reinforce the wall. Buttresses are fairly common on more ancient buildings, especially in Germany, as a means of providing support to act against the sideways forces arising out of the roof structures that lack adequate bracing." these were invented in the gothic period as a way of building taller buildings; there was a special interest in building taller, but there were obviously structural problems, gravity etc; in order to withstand the load of taller walls, the buttresses were created; these give extra support to weak areas where stones would tend to displace from, (specially when building a vaulted ceiling, or an arch etc,) since these stones were not held in place by mortar or any type of concrete, but by their own weight and placement.
