Because Christians believe that you have to help the poor from teachings in The Bible to get into Heaven and to be a good Christian. Good Bible references that show this is the Parable of the sheep and goats, the Good Samaritian, Deuteronomy 24: 14-22, the widow's mite, and many others. Plus it's a catholic charity so Catholics obviously support the charity.
