If you mean "How is it treated as a reference book or object":

* A bible is a book - treat it as a book if you intend to use it for an extended period of time * If it is a valuable antique (a Gutenberg Bile) treat it as a valuable antique

If you mean "How is it treated as one of my valuable cultural icons":

* Treat it with the care you would give to the Qur'an, Tibetan Book of the Dead or a copy of the Heart Sutra. Any less care would be a bad example to those who see these other texts as being more valuable than your Bible to their culture.

Answer:

There are many branches of Christianity, and each treats and uses The Bible slightly different. All denominations however, recognize that it is the word of God and therefore has a profound influence over their daily lives. For most groups it outlines a specific set of "rules" for life, but some groups such as the Mormons, have a secondary text for that purpose. Overall, the Bible is revered as the holy word of God.

Christians accept it as 'the inspired Word of God'... However... * This does not mean that it was dictated by God in that those who wrote it were somehow possessed and wrote just what God told them to. * This does not mean that the words of the Bible should be taken absolutely literally, unless the accounts are historical. In fact, many books (Job, Genesis, Revelation as just three examples) should never be taken literally as to do so would mean that the inner truths that they give us would be missed. * Ths does not mean that we should consider the words of Scripture as being beyond criticism, or ctitical study - the first commandment states that we should have no other gods apart from God - and that includes raising scripture up to be our infallible 'god'. Instead we should accept scripture as inspired by God in that He is the reason behind why the scriptures were written in the first place. God reveals himnself to us in many ways - through experiences, through relationships, through prayer, through loved ones --- and through scripture. Throughout the Bible the writers, from the writer of Genesis (Moses??) through to the writer of Revelation (John), have revealed, through the Holy Spirit working in them, more and more of the nature of God. And for this revelation through his word we must be grateful, but equally grateful that God reveals himself to us through many other ways too.

Christians show respect for the Bible by:

1. Acknowledging it as God's Word(1 Thessalonians 2:13) ". . .For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe."NASB(Galatians 1:11)(2 Timothy 3:16)

2. Recognizing it as THE authority in our lives(Hebrews 4:12)"...For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart..."NIV(Psalm 119:105) (Romans 15:4)(Luke 11:28)(John 15:14) and living in a way so as not to bring reproach on God or his word (Titus 2:1-5) .

3. Sharing it's powerful message with others (Acts 13:5) "...When they reached Salamis, they began to proclaim the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews..."NASB(Matthew 24:14) (Matthew 28:19+20)(Acts 18:11)(2 Corinthians 2:17)(Philippians 1:14)

I had the same problem starting out. You must know that you will have to read it several times to understand its true meaning. So I would read it normally the first time to get a novice understanding of it, and then read it a second time, reading a little slower trying to deepen your understanding of the Word. You might have to read it more than two or three times. Your understanding of the Bible will increase your understanding of God.
