Dominicans do not celebrate Columbus Day because the holiday is associated with the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492, which marked the beginning of colonialism and the oppression of Indigenous peoples in the Americas. Instead, they observe "Día de la Raza" or "Día de la Resistencia Taína," focusing on the resilience and contributions of Indigenous and Afro-Dominican cultures. This shift reflects a broader acknowledgment of the negative impacts of colonization on their history and identity.
