The vast majority of Egyptians are Muslim. Muslims believe that the present life is a trial in preparation for the next realm of existence. When a Muslim dies, he or she is washed and wrapped in a clean, white cloth (usually by a family member) and buried after a special prayer, preferably the same day.
Long ago Egyptians believed that there was a next life in which they can not die. Now they would believe the same thing as you.

The "soul" to them was the ba and ka: your personality and "uniqueness." You had to be well preserved and mummified so that after you die, your ba and ka could recognize you and return to your body. For you would use that body to go on the journey to the Afterworld. Like Heaven for the ancient Egyptians. :)
