As of 2003 57% of Men and of 89% Woman were illiterate. The ruling Taliban made a law that women and girls cannot go to school because they don't want any educated people in their country. In 2011 a 12-year-old girl who stood up against the law was shot and almost killed. She was brought to England and recovered. She now campaigns for girls rights to an education in Afghanistan. At the present time education is very poor for much of the population.
