Arteries are the major blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart. Except for the pulmonary arteries which go from the atrium to the lungs, arteries carry oxygenated blood.

The veins bring blood back into the heart. Except for the pulmonary veins that connect the lungs to the ventricles of the heart, veins carry deoxygenated blood.
