Kangaroo rats are primarily granivores (seed-eaters). They eat seeds from the desert grasses in their habitat. They also eat plant parts such as leaves, stems, buds, some fruit, and many of them eat insects, grubs and larvae. They also need to drink little if any water; the seeds they eat are frequently high in water content, and kangaroo rats can also rely on water produced by their cells (metabolic water) to survive.
Kangaroo rats are not the same as rat kangaroos of Australia.

Most species of rat kangaroos are omnivores which eat a variety of vegetation and small invertebrates such as earthworms and grasshoppers. They eat seeds, tubers and fruit from various plants in their habitat. Fungi forms a major part of their diet.
