Autolysis is caused by enzymes known as autolytic enzymes, such as lysosomal enzymes, that break down cellular components. These enzymes are released when cells are damaged or die, leading to the breakdown of cell membranes and organelles.
The root word of "lysosomal" is "lysosome." Lysosomes are membrane-bound organelles found in the cytoplasm of most cells, containing enzymes that break down cellular waste and debris.
The lysosomal membrane is protected from the lysosomal enzymes due to the presence of a protective glycoprotein layer on its surface.
