What do mermaids sound like?

If we were to actually have mermaids, there are a great number of ways they might sound. They could sound like a porpoise or dolphin, or they might sound like a walrus. If they're more amphibian than mammal, they might sound like a frog if they have sound at all. The answer to this question is difficult because of the sheer range of possibiliities--the above could be true, or they might sound completely unlike anything we've ever heard.

But if real and intelligent mermaids could (as legends sometimes have it) walk on land with legs and converse with us, they would not have difficulty blending with us and learning our ways--they would have to be very secretive, since we have never actually caught one on record. We could have them among us right now, and never even know it. The imagination could run wild.

And if they had human-like vocal cords and could produce sound in the air, then they may not produce a lot of sound in the water, but perhaps they use body language or even telepathy (if telepathy exists).

Nobody really knows, so you're free to think about how the animals of the sea produce sound, and perhaps you'll discover something that the rest of us have missed.
