Generally, older people have many different thoughts about knitting.
Lots of people knit, at any age. There is a certain pleasure in making your own sweaters, scarves, or bedspreads, etc. It is true that older people are more likely to spend time knitting than younger people, because older people who have retired have more time available for their hobbies.

There is no documented evidence that any US president enjoyed knitting as a hobby. Presidents have a wide range of hobbies and interests, such as gardening, fishing, and playing sports, but knitting is not known to be one of them.
We think they're stupid and in poor taste -- exactly the way older people felt about our clothing when we were younger.
