The pectoral muscles are what we commonly call the chest muscles. The pectoralis majors are primarily responsible for movement of the shoulder joint.
It can flex the humerus, as in throwing a ball side-arm, and in lifting a child. Secondly, it adducts the humerus, as when flapping the arms.

The anterior (front) part of your upper chest (thoracic region) is referred to as the pectoral region. If you are a fish, pectorals refer to the pectoral fins in this area. In more common terms, the pectorals in humans, refer to the pectoral muscles. Usually the pectoralis major, the larger of the two. The smaller muscle underneath it is called the pectoralis minor.

pectorals help your arm muscles an awful lot, they help lift the arm and when you exercise doing things like pull ups, press ups and bench press it helps your arms to push or pull up.
