All land south of 60 degrees S, which includes all of Antarctica, is governed by the Antarctic Treaty. The treaty preserves this part of Earth for the scientific study of the planet's health.

This means that 'people' including scientists and workers in support of science, live and work temporarily in Antarctica for this purpose.
