Poems are expressions of human thought. As the intelligence and mental acuity of the poet rises, the more refined become his thoughts expressed in his poems. Therefore poetry imparts to it's reader the pleasures of dealing with an intelligent man who is conversent also which is rare. Carlyle has said that poetry is musical thought which is an added attraction. We can not only get refined through reading and going through the thoughts of an intelligent man but can also sing them at our leisure. So naturally people hold poems in high esteem and consider them most beneficial and useful to mankind.

The romantic poems are not 'romantic' (lovey-dovey mushy stuff) like most people think. They are actually a collection of poems that were written during the romantic era (the 1800s). The most famous of the poems are by Lord Byron, William Blake, William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Percy Bysshe Shelly and John Keats. The poems mainly focus on nature and/or revolution as inspired by the French Revolution, Industrial Revolution and the American War of Independence
