Chicken and pork are often served because meat was considered a luxury item. Due to poverty, some families save the chicken just for this occasion. Another classic dish is the vegetarian dish Buddha's delight. This delicious platter of vegetables contains many other symbolic ingredients such as tigerlily buds, red dates, lotus seeds, bamboo shoots, cloud ear mushrooms, water chestnuts and Chinese cabbage.
