Rabbits can drink water out of water bottles or out of bowls. Some rabbits don't care, either way, but some rabbits have strong preferences! Ideally, give your rabbit both options at all times.

It's important to encourage as much water drinking as possible. When rabbits are dehydrated, they're more prone to digestive issues. Lots of hay, water, and exercise are the three best ways to keep a rabbit healthy!

Bowls

  • Easier and more comfortable for rabbits to drink from -- some studies suggest that rabbits drink more water when they have bowls (vs bottles)
  • Water in bowls can get dirty easily (with hay, litter, dirt/dust from the floor, etc.) Make sure you check the water frequently, and change the water and wash the bowl daily

Bottles

  • Make sure the spout is out of the way. If the rabbit panics and bolts, they can injure themselves
  • Replace the water daily -- it may not get dirty, but it will taste stale
  • Get a bottle brush and a spout brush and keep it clean! Wash it out at least weekly, but more often if your water grows algae
  • Get the biggest water bottle that you can (look online if your local stores don't have many options!) because the bigger the bottle, the bigger the spout, and the more water your bunny will drink

Can bunnies have tap water?

Pet bunnies should be given the same water that the humans are drinking. If you drink water from the tap, it's safe to give it to rabbits, too. However, if you don't drink water from the tap because it isn't safe, then don't give it to rabbits, either. Rabbits should always have access to cool, clean, potable water.
