Florida State University was founded in 1851, and actually celebrated its sesquicentennial in 2001. The campus is located on the oldest continuous site of higher education in the state of Florida - a fun fact is that the man who donated the land and funds to create what would later become Florida State University was Francis W. Eppes, the grandson of Thomas Jefferson. (And Thomas Jefferson? In addition to his role in establishing the United States of America, he led founding of the University of Virginia (UVA). Fun fact: UVA is in the same athletic conference as FSU, the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
