Answer
The two knobs closest to You are for volume for each different pick up and the farther away are for Tone of the different pickups. That is, closer towards the neck, not vertically. The one on top is for the neck pick-up (top on 3-way switch) and the one on the bottom is for the bridge pick-up (bottom on switch).
the one closest to you are for volume control the one second closest to the bridge is for when your guitar is on tremble, and the other one is for when its on rhythim!

This site has a lot of information:Electric guitar innovationsPaul was dissatisfied with the electric guitars that were sold in the mid 1930s and began experimenting with a few designs of his own. Famously, he created "The Log," which was nothing more than a length of common 4" by 4" fence post with bridge, guitar neck, and pickup attached. For the sake of appearance, he attached the body of an Epiphone hollow-body guitar, sawn lengthwise with The Log in the middle. This solved his two main problems: feedback, as the acoustic body no longer resonated with the amplified sound, and sustain, as the energy of the strings was not dissipated in generating sound through the guitar body. Another site:The same pickups were also available on Epiphone models (since Gibson was building Epiphone guitars in the 1950s) and the design is best remembered for its appearance on the hollow body Epiphone Casino of the mid to late 1960s. All three Beatles guitarists bought one, and recently, Paul McCartney said, "If I had to choose one electric guitar, it would be this one."
Les Paul are so much more heavy but a lot better sound quality, Les Paul's also have that acoustic feeling. Fender however are a more rocky type, light weight and can deliver high quality sound but not as good as the Les Paul overall fender is better known but if you play all types of music the Les Paul can adapt to that. Les Paul is the better one. I have to say this man is wrong ^^ The les paul guitar is made mainly for rock type music while the fender (strat im guessing your thinking of?) is made more for the blues. You can not compare the two, they are complete opposites Les Paul: Body: Mahogany Neck: Mahogany Fretboard: Rosewood or Ebony Pickups: Humbuckers Scale length: 24 3/4" Misc: Angled headstock, Maple Top Strat: Body: Alder or Ash Neck: Maple Fretboard: Maple or Rosewood Pickups: Single Coil Scale Length: 25 1/2" Misc: Straight Headstock Any simularities? No! Therefor the guitars are completely different and can not be compared
An electric Gibson or Epiphone Les Paul has six strings, but a bass has usually has 4.
