In Russian, the word Zhid (literally Jew) is to this day considered a curse word comparable to what we call "the N word" in English because to even say or write it would be extremely improper in polite company. Because of this, Russians who find themselves in need of actually talking about Jews use lots of euphemisms. In Soviet times, "rootless cosmopolitans" or sometimes "brown haired cosmopolitans" were popular. Brown hair because any good Slav should have blond hair. Cosmopolitan, because Jews were seen as foreigners with no proper connection to Mother Russia. Another term was "Odessa men" because there were many Jews from Odessa. Other terms had parallels in English that were popular when the word Jew was considered impolite back in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Consider calling Jews "of the Mosaic faith," or "Hebrews."
