Arteries carry blood away from the heart, whereas veins carry blood toward the heart.

In general, arteries carry oxygenated blood and veins carry deoxygenated blood. This is NOT the case for the pulmonary vein, which brings freshly oxygenated blood back to the left side of the heart so that it can be distributed to the rest of the body.
