Officially, it doesn't represent blood. Long before the current Canadian flag was adopted in 1965, red and white had been the official colours of Canada, going back to 1921 when King George V declared Canada's official colours as red to represent the flag of England (St George's Cross) and white to represent the French royal emblem.
