Do the voters elect electors not the presidential candidates
The electors are chosen by the voters of each state in the presidential election. When people vote for president, they actually are choosing the electors supporting the candidates named on the ballot.

There is no unwritten constitution and the election laws for president are in the constitution.
The election in which citizens vote for electors who then elect the president is known as the Electoral College election, held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. During this election, voters in each state cast their ballots for a slate of electors pledged to a specific presidential candidate. These electors then formally cast their votes for president in December, following the general election.
