There main prey is Krill, Crab and Fish. Like a lot of whales, their favorite is Krill. Krill is consumed in mass quantities are is prime source of food.

In the winter, Humpbacks go to warmer, tropical waters to breed. During this time, the adult humpbacks don't eat because there isn't much food in warmer waters. Young calves will feed on it's mother's milk. If the humpbacks found food in the tropical waters, they would eat.
Blubber is fat. Fat provides insulation to any body. Wales have plenty of fatty blubber that insulates their bodies. With the body insulated, their internal workings are able to maintain a constant temperature as the outside temperature is not an issue.

Native is not a word I would choose. Humpbacks live in all oceans of the world and feed in both Antarctica and the Arctic oceans. There are northern and southern hemisphere humpbacks, with research showing (and whaling records) these great whales may cross the equator at times. Much more research needs to be done.
