The characters are the same. Wicked's about Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda before Dorothy's house dropped in. You only see Dorothy's silhouette in Wicked. Also, Wicked is centered around the friendship of the Wicked Witch (Elphaba) and Glinda.
There are direct references from the musical "The Wizard of Oz" which Wicked is based on. The writers also included references to Evita (balcony scene), and Tarzan (Fiyero's entrance by swinging rope).
