Babalu
The neighborhood kids call Ali "Babalu" in "The Kite Runner."
In "The Kite Runner," winter was every kid's favorite season in Kabul because it brought snow for playing, schools were closed, and there were kite tournaments held on rooftops. This gave children the opportunity to spend time with their friends, fly kites, and experience moments of joy and excitement amidst the difficult circumstances in Afghanistan.
In English the word translates to what you might call a "boogey man". Basically a scary monster. Some of the children refer to Ali as babalu because of his apperance and because of the way he walks.... He hobbles around because of polio that inflicted him and "left him with a twisted, atrophied right leg that was sallow skin over bone with little in between except a paper-thin layer of muscle"(Khaled Hosseini pg 8)
