The ancient Mesopotamians were focused upon survival as they strove to find their place in the world. Significant events were happening all around, especially in the form of atmospheric phenomena. It was the recognition of these events and the impressions the people took from them that defined their religious practices. New or unusual phenomena were deemed the work of the gods and the Mesopotamians seemingly had a different deity for each. All in all, they were a very passive people and did not become aggressive in nature until late in the Third Millenium.
