You are entering the Sphinx, not the pyramids. The four hieroglyphics by the entrance are the key to the Falling Blocks challenge (number three of four), so you can jot them down or wait until you fail the challenge the first time. The second sign on the wall is for the scorpion pit. Three of the lines are sideways (--|-) indicating that the three stones form part of the path over the scorpion. Pressing each of the sideways lines once will rotate the lines so that all are horizontal (----) and you can cross the pit. In the final challenge, the Sand Room, the pictures show the order in which the switches should be pulled. This is also indicated by the dots on the bellies of the little statues (1, 2, 3, or 4 dots. Drop all four before the sand covers the switches.
