The thirteen stripes of the U.S Flag (red alternating white) represent the 13 original colonies of the Unites States. Its fifty stars represent the 50 states.
The stripes on the United States flag (13 in the current form), represent the original 13 founding colonies. The color of the stripes (alternating red and white) don't individually stand for anything - that is, the color of the stripes, field, and stars don't specifically have any meaning. The choice of red, white, and blue for the US Flag seems to come from the Union Jack (the flag of the United Kingdom). As the original colonies were formerly British, using the flag of their former overlord as the basis for the new flag is a reasonable choice.
