They tell you how often an atom - or a group of atoms - are repeated.
In chemistry, a coefficient in front of a chemical formula tells you how many moles you have. When balancing a chemical equation, the law of conservation of matter must be upheld. To do this, you add coefficients as needed, and these coefficients represent mole ratios of either reactants or products.

A chemical equation tells you the reactants and the products, and also the ratios of each. The ratios can refer to numbers of atoms and molecules or numbers of moles of each reactant and product.

The subscript in the equation tells you how many atoms of that element there are in the reaction. For example: H20 --> H2 + O2 Before the reaction there are 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen (the subscript 1 isn't shown). After the reaction there are 2 hydrogen atoms and 2 oxygen atoms. Keep in mind that this is a skeleton equation and isn't balanced yet.
